This contribution presents sermones ad populum 263, 263A, 265B of Augustine of Hippo (354-430). These sermons are situated on the liturgical feast of Ascension, and were probably preached at Carthage in 397, the beginning of Augustine’s episcopate and of his preaching activity. An overview of the presence of these three sermones in the Augustine research and the analysis of their content, show firstly Augustine’s emphasis on Christology and ethics in the liturgical celebration of Ascension. Furthermore these sermons illustrate that the subject of grace -though not necessarily explicit -is present in sermons long before the beginning (411/ 412) of the Pelagian controversy.
